Fast Facts:

  • In the spring of 2025, Panasonic North America opened its 300-acre battery manufacturing facility in De Soto’s Astra Enterprise Park. This investment by Panasonic represents the largest ever economic development project in Kansas’ history.
  • Panasonic North America has made commitments to local road improvements, workforce and education investments, and as a result, De Soto is expected to see a return of $400 million over the next 20 years. Retail has already ticked up 12% since last year, according to the town of De Soto. 
  • Panasonic’s state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries will be produced by local Kansans, with 4,000 manufacturing jobs at the plant an additional 3,800 indirect jobs in supply, vending, and retail.

High Banks Wind

Fast Facts:

  • High Banks Wind is an operational wind farm developed by NextEra Energy. High Banks provides over 600 megawatts of power and is the largest single source of energy in the State of Kansas, according to the University of Kansas.
  • Over 450 construction jobs were created for this project, with an average salary of $116,701 per employee. In total, the project is expected to create 726 jobs and an annual payment of $5 million to landowners.
  • At full capacity, High Banks will generate enough electricity to power more than 240,000 homes.

Katy Wind

Fast Facts:

  • EDF Renewables is developing one of Kansas’ largest wind farms, Katy Wind, in Crawford County.
  • Katy Wind will generate 310 megawatts, enough to power 108,000 Kansas homes.
  • This project will become fully operational in 2028 and will use the Production Tax Credit once developed.
